When you were a kid, who sent you scurrying behind the sofa? The tin-voiced Daleks? The relentlessly marching cybermen? Or perhaps another of the legion of weird low BBC budget monsters facing the good Doctor when he left the Tardis?

Back in telly’s black and white days, scaring the living daylights out of children was seen as almost a public duty by the Beeb. Even mum and dad thought it mildly amusing to watch the kids abandon the egg and chips for front-of-the-telly Saturday night dinner to race behind the settee. Had to finish your dinner afterwards, of course.

Personally, the Daleks didn’t scare me. My dad worked for Caterpillar tractors. He told me in no uncertain terms that his earthmovers would flatten the Dalek army before they had even left Troon. No idea why my father thought the Dalek invasion would start on the Clyde coast. Also, Daleks could not get upstairs. This is crucial. It means you could hide under the blankets (note: never a duvet) whilst they trundled about downstairs.
