Lothians golfer Jane Turner is six shots clear of the field at the halfway stage in a Ladies European Tour Qualifying School event in Morocco.

Turner, who played out of Craigielaw at the peak of her amateur career but also has links with West Linton, got off to a flying start in the pre-qualifier at Mohammedia Golf Club with a seven-under-par 65.

And, though unable to maintain the fireworks as she added a 73, the 2012 Scottish Women’s Championship runner-up holds a commanding lead heading into the final 36 holes.

It’s been more of a struggle so far Gabrielle Macdonald, the other Lothians player among the hopefuls sitting joint-37th on 14-over after opening rounds of 78 and 80.

Closer to home, host club assistant pro Cameron Marr won the East Alliance event at Musselburgh with a two-under-par 69. The effort earned him a two-shot success over Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre), Louis Gaughan (Bathgate) and Marc Owenson (Gullane).

Baberton’s Ron Grant won the handicap honours with a net 71 off six, pipping Nathan Free (Longniddry), Andy Rothney (Deer Park) and Brian Thomson (Broomieknowe) by a shot.

Top seniors on 73 were Jimmy Rankeillor (Baberton) and George Wither (Duddingston).
